7th Sunday of Easter
LSB: DIVINE SERVICE Setting Three (page 184) with Holy Communion
Hymns: # 493, 587, 623 - 701 - 783 communion, 924
Psalm: 68:1-10
Martin Luther: “In this sacrament he offers us all the treasures he brought from heaven for us ... We must never regard the sacrament as a harmful thing from which we should flee, but as a pure, wholesome, soothing medicine which aids and quickens us in both soul and body. For where the soul is healed, the body has benefited also. Why, then, do we act as if the sacrament were a poison which would kill us if we ate of it?" (Large Catechism, Fifth Part, 70).
Christ does not wish us to come to this nourishing meal with fear, resentment, or other selfish concerns. It is the “medicine of immortality.” (John 6). It harms only those who reject Christ’s promise that He gives His true body with the bread for the forgiveness of sins. Such fears and worries vanish when one views the sacrament as pure gift. “Take eat; …take drink … given and shed for you for the forgiveness of sins.” Trust Christ’s words and come to the table “not doubting but firmly believing” (Small Catechism).
